As you either already knew or could likely guess, my name is Rae Whitlock. Hi.
I’m originally from the Magic City of Birmingham, Alabama, but recently was exiled moved to the Midwest — Columbus, Ohio, to be exact. I miss the South, but fortunately, this city’s got a lot to offer and I love it more the longer I live here.
(There were also stops along the way in small-town New Jersey, southern Florida, and west Tennessee.)
I have a wife named Amy. She’s alright by me. We first met online on some “Christian teens” IRC channel in 1996, met “in-real-life” at a youth conference in 1998, dated long-distance for years, broke up and got back together about a hundred-some-odd times, made various dumb decisions along the way, and got hitched on March 27 of 2004. (Holy crap, our third anniversary is four days from my writing this. Better get to shopping.)
There have been lots of the proverbial “ups and downs” in our relationship, but I like being married. Besides, who else is going to wipe the crusty noses, tell me when to get off of the computer, put up with my eccentricities, and give me an excuse to watch American Idol without feeling like I’ve compromised my manhood? No one I know, that’s for sure. I think I’ll keep her.
We also have a little girl named Zoë, and we couldn’t imagine life without her. She more than lives up to the meaning of her name (”life”, “full of liveliness”, etc). She loves Dora, Diego, taking pictures with her camera, dancing, soccer, music, baseball, making up songs and stories, and Moses. Hours of entertainment, this kid.
Vocationally, I’m a computer networking professional (ie: “IT guy”). I’ve been at it for almost ten years now, so I suppose that means I’m not too bad at it. My passions lately have been bending toward the proclamation and spread of the story of and good news about a carpenter-turned-King named Jesus. Maybe that’ll pan out into ordained ministry . . . maybe I’ll end up as the IT guy who preaches and teaches every once in a while. I’ll keep you posted.
People, places, and things that I dig include good libations (coffee, beer, wine), good music, my family, my church, Arrested Development (R. I. P.), technology, theology, Macintosh computers, the Gospel, sunshine, liturgy, the New York Mets, the reformed tradition, and good books.
At this point, I have no specific plan for this blog/website. I see it largely as a continuation/evolution of my previous location, “not another blog” (hence the “not another blog v2.0″ moniker here). There will certainly be theological musings, news on my personal and family life, thoughts on technology, music, food and drink, or whatever else happens to tickle my fancy at post-time.
I hope you stick around.
