As if I need more reasons to be proud of my little girl . . . her current favorite song is Sufjan Stevens’ Chicago. Almost every time* she sees me open iTunes, she says “Daddy, would you put on ‘Down in Chicago’?” (That’s what she hears when Sufjan actually sings “drove to Chicago” in the first verse.) I beam — at least internally — when she sings along . . . “You came to take us. All things go! All things go!”
We might not have cool enough to have been featured in Columbus Monthly’s recent article on “Columbus’ Hipster Parents” (unlike some people I know), but I think we’re doing alright as we try to raise a little cultural missionary.
[Now if I can only get her to quit enjoying that commercial radio crap her mommy occasionally enjoys. ;-)]
*: The rare exceptions to this are when she asks for The Human League’s Don’t You Want Me.

as many cultural missionaries as we can produce, i’m okay with it!
how old is that kid now?
She’ll be four in about three weeks.
My kids have been shouting, “put on Feist!” lately, which similarly makes me proud. It’s been a while since I’ve spun Illinois, but when it was in constant rotation, they loved it. I have a video of Fiona rocking out to TMOMSOH.
please be careful referring to Mommy’s favorites as “crap” - can become a slippery slope. “Men, love your wives.” (as I know you do - always show you do. - from “Confessions & Lessons Hopefully Learned by an Aging Christian Hedonist”
) If I am starting to get on your last nerve, or if you believe this is not the right place, please let me know. - which probably means I know this is not the right place - I won’t do this again here.
I listened to the Chicago tune (the little part the site would allow) - that happy rhythm is so Zoe!!
Tell Amy and the Baby I said Hey!
Steph called yesterday - thanks for continuing to check in on her - she and I may go out for breakfast Saturday morning - I hope so.
Love Ya,
Dad
Well you know . . . I make fun of her taste for mass-marketed Top 40 stuff that appeals to the lowest common denominator. She in turn makes fun of my taste for snob rock that no one’s ever heard of. It’s a good give and take..
Besides, we can’t really take ourselves too seriously when each of us has favorites that bleed over into the other’s “territory”.
(But the wisdom in being careful in what we say is duly noted.)
Good to hear that Steph called.
