Rae’s Top . . . Eight Albums of ’06.

My first attempt at such a list.

1) These Friends of Mine, Rosie Thomas
2) Help My Unbelief, Red Mountain Church
3) I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, Yo La Tengo
4) Songs For Christmas, Volumes I-V, Sufjan Stevens
5) Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, Neko Case
6) Ys, Joanna Newsom
7) Broken Boy Soldiers, The Raconteurs 8) FutureSex/LoveSounds, Justin Timberlake (Shut up, all of you. It’s a good album.)

The Yo La Tengo album also gets the one-time-only distinction of “Best Album Title In All Of History – Past, Present, or Future (So Everyone Else Can Give Up Now)”. Congrats, YLT!

Any thoughts? What on this list sucks? (Saying “number eight” doesn’t count . . . too easy, and most people who’d knee-jerk and say that probably haven’t listened to it.) What else belongs here?

Didn’t you once lament your wife’s request to take her to see Timberlake? ;)

I have no friend named Rae…

No, but really. I have heard nothing but great things about the album (number 8, that is) from numerous sources so I will not knock you there.

But Rosie Thomas number one?? That is quite a suprise I must say. And I have been meaning to check out Joanna Newsom.

GFM – There is a LOT to my disdain for Timberlake that goes beyond the general indie-snobbery. Still, he managed to put together a pretty darn good album this time around.

Travis – Rosie’s album is a masterpiece to me. It’s doubtful that it’s on many more top-whatever lists, but it’s just that good to my ears.

Travis – Oh yeah. Sorry. New list forthcoming with Mary J. Blige and Ludacris as #1 and #2.

Rae,
I like Rosie Thomas a lot – so good choice. I think the joanna newsom record deserves to be in the lower portion of the “top 10 records that have deluded the indie scene due to extravagant instruments and awful singing.” I am trying really really hard to get into it. But it aint happening.

Other than that, your list looks awesome. The new Yo La Tengo has been playing on my ipod more than anything this year.

hope all is well man. Way to take the plunge with the minimac.

#8 doesn’t appeal to me based on lyrical content alone. I’m really careful about what I let roll around in my head all day, and well, I’d rather not have that in there.
